Student Monthly Budget Calculator

Enter the costs you expect in a normal month and the number of months the budget must cover. The calculator returns a monthly total, the period total and a daily average.

Monthly total—
Total for the period—
Average per day—

A budget built from local prices is more reliable than a national average; the first month usually costs more because of setup purchases.

Academic months versus calendar months

A student budget often covers the months of the academic year, while rent and insurance may run for twelve. The calculator multiplies the monthly total by the months entered, so use the period the money must actually last, including the summer if the lease continues.

If the academic year is nine months but the tenancy is twelve, budget the full twelve and treat the summer as a separate funding question. This is also how visa guidance often differs from a personal budget: the rule may cover twelve months while the course bills for nine.

What a daily figure is good for

A daily average turns a monthly budget into something comparable with small purchases: a coffee, a bus ticket, a takeaway meal. It is a checking tool, not a target, because spending is lumpy and rent is not paid per day.

The number is most useful when it looks too tight. If the daily allowance barely covers food and transport, the monthly total is missing something, usually social spending, books or a phone contract.

Frequently asked questions

Should savings be part of the monthly budget?

Treat savings as a separate line if the funding plan depends on building a reserve. This calculator covers spending only.

Are one-time purchases included?

No. Add bedding, kitchen items, a laptop and a deposit separately in the first month.

Which months should be entered?

The months the budget must cover, including any period when rent continues but teaching does not.
