Reading the requirement correctly

Official guidance usually defines the amount as tuition plus a living-cost figure for a set number of months, sometimes with a buffer for travel or dependants. The definition matters more than the total: money held in an investment or in an account the route does not accept may not count even when its value is sufficient.

The period covered can differ from the actual programme. A requirement covering twelve months may be checked again for later years, so the money has to be planned for the whole course, not just the first application.

Saving timeline versus application date

The monthly saving figure only matters against the date the evidence is needed. If the application is in three months, a plan that needs twelve months to fill the gap is not a plan; it is a signal to change the programme, the city or the funding source.

Deposits already paid reduce the cash still required, but only if the visa route recognises them. Keep the receipts and confirm that paid deposits can be counted before subtracting them from the target.

Frequently asked questions

Does a scholarship reduce the proof of funds?

Often, but usually only once it is confirmed in an accepted form. An expected award may not satisfy the requirement at the application date; check what evidence the authority accepts.

Can family money be used?

In many routes, yes, with a declaration and evidence of the relationship and the source of funds. The accepted documents are set by the destination authority.

What does the buffer cover?

Typically travel, insurance or rate movements, depending on the route. It is a rule rather than a personal safety margin, so keep a separate reserve if possible.
