Tuition Currency Cost Calculator
Enter tuition in the currency the institution bills in and the rate you can actually obtain. The calculator adds transfer costs and shows the sensitivity to a worse rate.
Exchange rates and card or transfer fees are set by the provider and move daily; the ten per cent move is a stress test, not a forecast.
Fees hide inside the rate
A card or transfer service may advertise a low commission and still charge through the exchange rate. The percentage fee in this calculator is separate from the rate, so enter the rate you actually obtain after any markup, not the mid-market rate.
Fixed fees matter most on small payments. A deposit paid by transfer may carry a fixed cost that is trivial on tuition and significant on a deposit, which is why the two should be compared separately.
Test a worse rate before committing
Tuition is usually billed months before it is paid, and the rate on the payment date is unknown. A ten per cent adverse move is a stress test: it shows how much extra the same bill costs if the home currency weakens.
The difference is a planning number, not a forecast. If the stressed cost breaks the budget, paying earlier, holding part of the money in the billing currency or arranging a forward contract may be worth discussing with a bank.
Frequently asked questions
Which rate should be entered?
The rate you can actually obtain for the payment, including any markup. Check it on the day you plan to transfer.
Are card fees included?
Only the percentage and fixed fees entered. Some cards add a separate foreign-transaction fee, which should be added to the percentage.
Does the calculator handle recurring payments?
No. Run it for each payment or multiply the result by the number of instalments at the same rate.
